La Jolla Program Vignette

We use a method of facilitating human potential and interpersonal effectiveness that grew out of client-centered therapy and known today as the person-centered approach. This approach was developed by psychologist Carl R. Rogers. Our staff worked extensively with Rogers, and he was an important person in the La Jolla Program’s establishment and development.

The Los Angeles Times identified Rogers’ 1961 classic, On Becoming a Person, as one of the 100 most influential books of the twentieth century. The American Psychological Association presented Rogers with its two most prestigious scientific and professional awards. The Journal of Counseling Psychology ranked his work as number one in terms of most durable influence in the field of counseling psychology.

The La Jolla Program is a place where for 40 years thousands of people from around the world have come to learn, experiment, study and experience this approach and to integrate these profound experiences into their lives both at home and at work.

Our time will be divided between meeting in small, often personal, groups and being in a large group discussing the interests of the participants including the application of the person-centered approach to one’s career.

Although the ideas of Carl Rogers have been around a long time, his insights still stun us at some deeper level of our self-understanding. His On Becoming a Person is especially recommended reading.

To help someone else “grow as a person” is no easier than to “grow oneself as a person.” But it can be done, and we have some hope – based on 40 years of observation and practice – that it may be guided and encouraged by what one learns at the La Jolla Program.

Take this week for yourself! Many, many people tell us this experience is still extremely useful, many years after their first La Jolla Program.
